Weekly Schedule
Most weeks we stick pretty close to the schedule below. Weeks with Early-Outs, testing, days off sometimes vary slightly from this schedule.
- Mondays: Etymology (Greek and Lation word roots) New roots are assigned each Monday, and some class time is provided to get students started on their weekly work. Etymology is due on Fridays at the beginning of the period.
- Tuesdays/Thursdays: Writers Workshop--Modes of Writing After students have been taught about a specific Mode of Writing (persuasive, expository, etc.) they are given time to write a piece that represents that style. Students will choose from a list of given topics or choose their own topics. Once they have written a rough draft they will begin the peer editing process. They will then edit the peer read rough draft and complete a final draft for the given Mode, usually on a google doc.
- Wednesdays: 20 Minute Essays Students are given a specific writing prompt, usually a quote. They have 20 minutes to prewrite and construct a response to the prompt. After a month of writing, students choose one of the four pieces they've written to turn in as a rough draft, which is graded for mechanics and content. Finally, a final draft is created on a google doc. In all, it takes about six weeks to finalize a piece, so expect to see two 20 minute essays a trimester.
- Fridays: Crazy of the Month Each month we will focus on a person who is well known within history, or even the unsung heroes. Students will take notes and partake in a writing activity that relates to the "crazy" they have focused on.
