Grading
The Standards: I grade based on the English Common Core Standards. (You can find them here.) In Literacy, I focus on the three major categories: Key Ideas & Details, Craft & Structure, and Integration of Knowledge & Ideas. These three major categories are used for both non-fiction and fiction texts. In Language Arts, I focus on Writing, Speaking & Listening, and Language Standards.

Assessing: When assessing student work, I look at the following categories
|
Assignment Points: This trimester, my grade book will look different. All assignments will be out of 100 points, that way it is easier for you and your student to see the percentage they received on an assignment. In reality, not all assignments will all weight the same. For example, a monthly warm-up assessment is worth 100 points, but its multiplier will be .25. An essay is still 100 points, but its multiplier will be a 1. What does this mean? You can still see how your student is doing on the individual assignments, but in grade calculation- the warm-up assessment won't be worth as much as the essay does. Assignments that are larger (or more intensive) will be worth more.

What do the grades mean?
Just a friendly reminder a "C" grade is average. If your child is meeting the 7th or 8th grade standards at the level I expect a 7th or 8th grader to do, his or her grade is probably a C, it's average. It means everything is fine. If your student is doing better than an average 7th or 8th grader does in meeting the standards, then his or her grade will reflect an A or B. |
When will grades be updated?
Since I'm a firm believer in giving students opportunities to better themselves and their assignments, grades won't be entered into Infinite Campus on a weekly basis. Why? I'm a firm believer that if something isn't right the first time around, let's fix it. That being said, my grade book is VERY fluid. For assignments that are graded, students will have multiple opportunities to write and rewrite before I give them a final grade.
If you don't see much activity in Infinite Campus- e-mail me or give me a call. This typically means that we are in the midst of a novel or writing assignment. When/if you contact me, I'll be able to give you a snapshot of where they are at in relation to the standard.
